Celebrating 13 Years of Temple's FNL Band
Apr 21, 2026

On Friday we celebrated a significant milestone: the 13th anniversary of our Friday Night Live Band. The congregation recognized this anniversary as the band's "Bar Mitzvah," honoring over a decade of community-driven music during Shabbat services.
Rabbi Maya Glasser led the service and reflected on the origin of the group. She read a letter from Rabbi Matt Cohen, who founded the band 13 years ago with the goal of creating an accessible, community-driven musical experience. In his letter, Rabbi Cohen shared his vision for the group:
"What drove my vision for this participatory Judaism was a simple belief: everyone needs an entry point into congregational life. For many people, the entry point can be obvious: worship services, Torah study, mitzvah projects, roles in leadership. But for others, while it may be important to be affiliated, there isn't always a clear in... What made all the work worthwhile wasn't just the music, it was what the music created. We put in many hours of rehearsal and we were intentional about making sure this was anything but a performance. This was worship. It was a sacred experience that the band members helped lead for their fellow congregants, and that is what made FNL so special."
The service concluded by asking founding band members in attendance to stand and be recognized. Through their continued dedication, the Friday Night Live Band remains a core part of the musical tradition at The Temple.
