Community Gives Meaning to Place: A Message from Rabbi Bell

Shalom from Jacksonville! I am delighted to be here and joining you for my first Shabbat service this Friday evening. Having just relocated from NYC to join the Temple community, I find myself reflecting on place and community. As it turns out, this week’s double Torah portion, Matot-Masei, has much to say about both.

Matot-Masei, brings the Book of Numbers to a close with a powerful reflection on place and community. As the Israelites stand at the threshold of a new chapter, the narrative pauses to recount the stages of their wilderness journey. It names the places where they camped along the way, preserving the memory of each step. Forty-two places. Some were sites of challenge, some of growth, some of uncertainty. Many are names we know little about. Our text remembers them all.

Why?

Perhaps because the Torah understands something essential about how communities are formed. Places are not meaningful simply because of where they are. They become meaningful because of what happens there and because of the people who fill them with purpose. Place does not shape a community. Community gives meaning to place. A makom becomes sacred through the relationships formed there, through the commitments people make to one another, through acts of chesed, and through shared memories.

Every congregation has its own masei, its own journey that has shaped who it is today. The moments of celebration and challenge, the prayers offered, the friendships formed, and the care extended to one another all become part of the story of its sacred story. As we begin this next chapter together, I am excited for the opportunities ahead: to learn, to grow, to build, and to continue creating a community, working alongside Rabbi Glasser, where people feel connected, valued, and inspired.

I look forward to standing with Rabbi Glasser on the bimah this Shabbat and beginning this journey with you.
